Paul de Brett amiss
PA Auckland. The Matamata trainer. Mr Dave O’Sullivan, has confirmed that the top galloper, Paul de Brett, will not be a starter in the $156,700 Melbourne Cup on November 1.
The powerful chestnut has suffered a recurrence of the ligament trouble that prevented him running in the Auckland Cup last January. It became apparent a few days ago that he would not be able to stand a Melbourne Cup preparation this year. O’Sullivan noticed him “stepping a fraction short” after an 800 m gallop at the three-quarter pace at Matamata.
O’Sullivan expects it will be about nine months before Paul de Brett can be tried again. Two weeks ago the trainer’s other Melbourne Cup hope, the Sydney Cup winner, Oopik, broke down a second time and last week was retired.
