Silver Lad heads Free Handicap

PA Wellington. The Northern colt, Silver Lad, from Takanlnl, and Heidelberg, from Matamata. head the 1976-77 three-year-old and two-year-old Free Handicaps respectively. The Free Handicaps for the racing season just completed have been compiled for the first time by Mr S. G. Tonks, of Auckland, at the request of the NewZealand Thoroughbred Breeders’ Association.

Mr Tonks has weighted 82 three-year-olds and 158 two-year-olds, giving a I.skg allowance for fillies. In a rider to the allowance Mr Tonks said that lie appreciated that the staying three-year-olds are in a number of cases, better endowed with stamina than their sprinting rivals. In framing the three-year-old handicap, the over-all and general quality of the horse had to be the yardstick.

He added that it would be unfair to unduly degrade the sprinting at which they may well

be untried. Therefore, no undue preference was given to the top staying three-year-olds.
