Top young riders at Riccarton

Five Australian apprentices will ride in the Air New Zealand, N.A.C. and Ansett Airlines Apprentice Invitation race on the final day of the Canterbury Jockey Club’s Grand National meeting next Saturday week.

They will be competing against ten of New Zealand’s leading apprentices from around the country — six from the North Island and four from the South. The Australian jockeys are W. Treloar (Melbourne), G. Allendoft (Sydney), G. Palmer (Queensland), G. Donnelly (W. Australia) and R. Suckling (South Australia). Wavne Treloar, who was the leading apprentice in Victoria last season, rode in the Apprentices Invitation Handicap staged by the Manawatu club in June last year. On that occasion he finished eighth on the wellsupported Denraine. Apart from Treloar, David Walsh (South Canterbury), Chris McNab (Hawke’s Bay) and Jimmy Collett (Southland) are the only riders who took part in the Manawatu event and will again be competing at Riccarton. The New Zealand riders are Walsh, McNab, Collett, Nigel Tiley (Auckland), Lance Douglas (Te Rapa), Dean Simonsen (Matamata), Grant Cooksley (Hawera) and Nick Harnett (Otago). Representatives from Canterbury and Wanganui have not yet been notified to Mr Warren Barberel, secretary of the Canterbury Jockey Club. The New Zealand apprentices all finished last season with creditable figures. Chris McNab ended the season as the country’s leading apprentice landing 53 winners. The others in order of wins were: Walsh (44), Harnett (34), Collett (31), Simonsen (30), Tiley (24), Douglas (22) and Cooksley (20).

The apprentices will arrive in Christchurch next Wednesday night and will have a chance to look over the track in fast work on Thursday morning.
