June trading helps reduce deficit

Lytteltons trade was 24.000 tonnes up flor June, compared with the month last year. The Lyttelton Barbour Board general manager (Mr J A. McPhail) said yesterday that this increase reduced the deficit tor the nine months since Octobei 1 to 10,200 tonnes. Since the loss of the Rangatira, coastal trade had been well down but increases in overseas imports and exports had helped balance the losses, he said. Mr McPhail said there had been substantial increases in petrol imports — he was pleased io see — significant increases in a wide range of primary produce exports, even though there had been a fall in wool due to stockpiling. : “This will right itself.” he said.
