Big project for crippled children

Accommodation projects costing $BOO,OOO are planned by the Crippled Children Society to enable the disabled to take a full part in the community.

According to the society’s national services adviser (Mr R. Kerse), the society has already opened hostels costing more than, $500,000. These were built with only $52,000 in Government aid.

Hostels in Christchurch, Auckland, and Southland were opened some time ago, and more recently in Hamilton, New Plymouth, Wanganui, and Gisborne. One will soon open in Masterton. Mr Kerse said he hoped that three types of accommodation would be provided — the traditional custodial sort; tire bed-sitter sort which would offer reduced, but necessary supervision; and a further stage of independent units in which the disabled could prepare for going out into the community. The latter would act as a bridge between a bed-sitter hostel and the disabled person’s own house.
