Canty retains netball cup

Canterbury retained thej Lane Cup with a fine netball victory over South Canterbury at Timaru yesterday, Canterbury won, 44-32, but it was not until the second half that it took the lead after an excellent firsthalf performance by less favou'ed South Canterbury, Canterbury took some time to adjust to the all-

I weather porous court, which the players found slow and slippery. Janice Stanbury and Maureen South began well for South Canterbury, which was three goals up before Canterbury scored.

The goalies, Helen Liilicoe and South, were quickly on target and Liilicoe in particular shot well in the first half.

South Canterbury’s experienced goat-keeper, Kay Hobson, anticipated well and made some good interceptions, which her team was quick to use to its advantage.

However, Canterbury’s forwards, Philippa Maclean and Lyndsay Pugh, began to combine better and, with som quick passing to Genae Katae and Adrienne Prattley, Canterbury was always within striking distance of its opponent. At half time, Canterbury trailed, 15-18. Maclean and the wing defence, Leigh Mills, changed positions after the break and the team played with much more fire and determination.

An interception from Katae and some quick passing movements enabled Canterbury to overhaul the

local team’s lead. From then on, Canterbury always looked in command.

The Canterbury defence was much tighter in the second half and South Canterbury had to fight hard for every goal. Mills and Pugh fed the goal-circle intelligently and Prattley managed to elude Hobson for some easy goals. However, the star for Can-

terbury was its young goal attack, Katae. She played well and was responsible for some fine interceptions ini mid-court. She also turned in an impressive display of goal shooting from difficult positions. Canterbury looked a different team in the second half and thoroughly deserved its win.
