C.S.S.O. hopeful
PA Wellington I The optimism expressed by the president of the Federation of Labour (Sir Thomas | Skinner) about the Government’s proposals on wageI fixing procedures to replace the freeze has been reflected by the State services. After a meeting with the Minister of State Services (Mr Gordon) the secretary of the Combined State Service Organisations (Mr I. E. Reddish) said he was “reasonably happy” with the Government’s approach.
“As Sir Thomas said (after a meeting with the Prime Minister. Mr Muldoon), there is a movement towards a return to free bargaining.” Mr Reddish said. “In general we are reasonably happy with the Government’s approach. It appears to me to be objective.” Mr Reddish—who said there were some “grey areas” to be resolved yet—said he was reasonably happy that the Government might come up with a “fair deal.”
Much discussions on that point had taken place at the meeting, but Mr Reddish would not go into detail about the talks.
“Our approach has always been that whatever happens in the private sector, we have got to get a reasonable system of translating it ino State rates,” he said.
