Taking no chances with Young Quinn
NZPA Washington The New Zealand trainer, Charlie Hunter, cannot help but grind his teeth when he sees the rich purses being offered at Meadowlands as he Is without his star pacer, Young Quinn, which is on the West Coast recovering from a leg ailment. “It’s tough with all this money here,” Hunter told N.Z.P.A. from his New Jersey hotel, “but I’m not going to hurry Quinn. He’s too good to take a chance with.” So while Meadowlands offers hundreds of thousands of dollars for the free-for-allers, Young Quinn is eating his head off on a farm outside Los Angeles.
Hunter said he has had good reports of the gelding’s progress from his veterinarian and will begin swimming him at the end of this month.
That is about the time the Hollywood Park season begins and Hunter hopes to have Young Quinn ready to contest the $100,006 American Pacing Classic on November 23. The horse will be given two or three races in early Novem-
ber to tune him up for that race.
Hunter plans to remain at Meadowlands until late this month before moving to the West Coast. He is still importing and aelllng horses and has been racing the two horses still tn his stable—Lunar Chance and Tricky Dick. He took Lunar Chance to Chicago in late June where he. won In Imin 58sec.
He then drove him in a (36,006 race In Detroit but the horse Injured a leg and is being spelled until the Hollywood meet-
ing. Tricky Dick, Just short of free-for-all class, has accumulated $65,000 In prize money this year but mostly seems to act the bridesmaid.
In 16 starts he has had three wins, four seconds, and four thirds. One night he ran Imin 56.8 sec but was beaten into second. His best winning time this year is Imin 58sec. Hunter is sending him to Chicago for a month or six weeks and then Tricky Dick will also join the team on the West Coast.
