Popular hire service

A service hiring exercise machines to Christchurch people has only five machines still available out of 30 after two weeks in business. There are already three or four exercise-machine hire services in Dunedin, and the Christchurch one has been started in partnership with one of these. The operator of the Christchurch service preferred not to be named, but said that demand had been good. He had not done any heavy advertising and might have to stop advertising completely' if the five machines left were taken before he could buy more. The service hires out exercycles and rowing machines and has a free pick-up and delivery service. The operator said that his big problem at the moment was getting enough machines from the manufacturer. They cost about $l4O each.

They are hired out at $3.50 a week, for four-week periods, but may be taken for longer.

The operator said that they were being taken by ordinary people who wanted to get fit but who probably could not afford their own machines.
