Volunteers will visit the elderly
Christchurch City Council pensioner housing will probably not have wardens, but more emphasis will be placed on volunteer visiting of the elderly.
The Canterbury Aged People’s Welfare Council had asked the council to consider wardens for Ferry Road area flats first, if the system was started. But the housing and property division said it already employed two social and clerical officers who made regular visits to the elderly as part of their duties, and property officers also called on tenants.
There was no evidence to suggest that a warden in the Ferry Road area, or anywhere else in the city, was fully' justified.
The council could not afford to hire wardens, but there would be a meeting soon of service clubs, churches and other organisations with the aim of increasing interest in the flats. It would involve the welfare council.
