Kiwis under threat

PA New Plymouth New Zealand’s national bird is under threat in Taranaki. Egmont National Park Board rangers blame opossum traps for the high kiwi casualty rate. In the last three weeks they have received seven dead or injured birds, but a senior ranger, Mr H. Spannagl, says this is only “the tip of the iceberg.” “If something is not done soon, we will just have an occasional kiwi in a kiwi house and on an offshore island,” he said. Six of the kiwi casualties were injured by opossum traps east of Eltham and Stratford, and the other was killed by dogs in Lucy’s Gully on the western slopes of Mount Egmont. This week three injured kiwis have been handed in by amateur hunters, whose trapping is much less intensive than that of the professionals. Mr Spannagl wants traps set and poison laid where kiwis cannot get at them.
