Basic rights
Sir, — As someone who has been studying the philosophy underlying the policies of the National Party, I was startled to hear Miss Colleen Dewe say, (in the Ngaio Marsh Theatre on June 22) that the only basic right which we have is the right to be protected from being killed. I would like to ask Miss Dewe if this was a slip of the tongue. If she replies that it was not, I would like to ask other members of the National Party whether they approve of such a statement. — Yours, etc. J. J. NEALE June 23, 1977. [Miss Colleen Dewe, M.P. for Lyttelton, replies: “Your correspondent J, J. Neale unfortunately did not hear my comment correctly. My remark was to the effect that just about the only basic right any person had was a right to live. This misunderstanding may have been due to the sound system, or even to the level of noise emanating from some parts of the audience. Failing those causes I cannot suggest anv other reason why he should think I would believe such a thing.”]
