Legal aid
Sir, — Like G. M. Avery (“The Press,” July 4) I want official comment on the question of restitution through the courts. When a family is deprived of the use of its car through the actions of drunken drivers there appears to be no way to reclaim the repair costs without considerable legal charges to the innocent party or, as in my case, claim for expenses incurred in hiring alternative transport while replacing the written-off vehicle. Insurance does not cover this if the offending driver is drunk, and there lies the injustice. Why should the innocent party be always on the losing side? In G. M. Avery’s case there appears to be unbelievable hardship. No legal aid, no car for weeks, and no bank balance, solely because she does no boozing or gambling. — Yours, etc., SHIRLEY G. DUFFY. July 4, 1977.
