Abortion decisions

Sir. — The S.P.U.C. proposal for abortion decisions to be made by one gynaecologist followed by a panel is unrealistic, unless it is designed to prevent legal abortions. Since the commonest grounds are those of disturbed mental health, it is unfair to the gynaecologist to expect him to decide on these psychological aspects, which he is not trained to do. Clearly if psychological disability is not seen by the gynaecologist, the patient would not even get to see the panel. This is even more discriminatory than the panel proposal of the Royal Commission on contraception, sterilisation and abortion and some of the commissioners themselves now prefer a more liberal approach. — Yours, etc., NOELINE L.
