Lefebvre undaunted by Vatican
NZPA-Reuter Nice I Archbishop Marcel Le-I febvre, the conservative rebel against the Vatican, has said in Nice that he would pay no attention to any eventual exicommunication by the Pope. Monsignor Lefebvre said! he did not think there had; been a complete break with Rome, but if that were to i happen “I would take no' notice of an excommunication decision.”
The French prelate spoke briefly with reporters after arriving in Nice to attend a Sunday Mass said by a local priest, one of those he ordained in Switzerland last Wednesday in defiance of Papal orders. He said he had heard that the Pope had assigned the Sacred Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith to discuss the points on which he disagreed with the liberalising decisions taken at the Vatican council. “So I don't think thebridges have been burned.” he said.
Discussing fundamental disagreements, the archbishop said: "As long as the Holy Father appears as the successor of St Peter, we are his most obedient and faithful followers. But when he leads us down new roads, we do not believe ourselves obliged to follow him.
