Davis wins Ontario
NZPA-Reuter Ottawa Ontario, Canadas’ wealthiest and most populous province, has returned ) the minority progressive [Conservative Government to power, according to official election results.
.( The Libera) Party edged the Left-of-centre New De[mocratic Party, which led i the Opposition in the last I legislature, into third place by only one seat. ! The Conservatives, who; have ruled Ontario for 34 years, gained sweeping vic-1 tones in the 1971 provincial: polling, but had to form al minority Government after) an election two years ago.) This time they increased! their seats by six to a total ( of 58 in the 125-seat legisla-j ture, still five short of a! majority.
The Liberals lost one I from the 1975 election to) finish at 34, an-d the Nat-) ional Democratic Party total! went down from 38 to 33.
Premier William Davis’s ’ campaign to include the separatist issue in the neighbouring province of Quebec apparently paid off.
