Heathcote rates up 20 p.c.
Heathcote County’s general rate will increase by 23 per cent this year. The county council at a meeting which ran from 7 p.m. to midnight on Tuesday, approved an increase in the general rate from 0.287 c in the dollar to 0.353 c. The water rate will rise 10 uer cent. According to the County Clerk (Mr K. D. Stills) this will mean an average total rate increase of about 20 per cent. Increased costs of present refuse disposal, and the council’s involvement in the proposed metropolitan refuse-disposal scheme accounted for most of the rate increase, said Mr Stills. Other factors were the repayment of a loan and inflation.
