Burnside’s win in doubt

Although Burnside A was four points clear of Christchurch A after the first complete round of the A grade squash competition ended last evening, it may yet have to relinquish the Blank Trophy. One of its players did not attend the compulsory referees’ seminars earlier this season, and Burnside may lose the points he has won in competition matches since April 30. A decision will be made at the Canterbury Squash Rackets Association’s management committee meeting tomorrow evening. Burnside, without its No. 1, Lyn Sparks, still beat Linwood, 8-2, in tlie final round of the competition, but late in the evening there was the possibility of a tie with Christchurch A, which beat High School Old

■ Boys B, 8-2. Linwood’s only chance of saving relegation was to win the ■ final contest of the evening beI tween ■ Peter Jelly-man, better known as a rugby player for the . ciub. and Malcolm Forster. There was a great battle between these No. fours and both ) made some brilliant retrives when their opponents appeared to : have placed a certain winner. At 7-6'in the fourth Jellyman, . volleving ouite well, was only - two points away from the match, I hut Forester came back strongly • to win this one, and then easily took the final game in 4min, : with Jellvman quite obviously l affected by the strength-sapping ; rallies of the previous game. The win meant that Sumner I scraped into the top six teams ' ahead of Linwood and that Burnside A had enough points to stay ■ clear of Christchurch A. . Other features of the contest I between Burnside and Linwood ' were Craig Hibbert's fine win : over Graham Fouldd. and Alan . Corkin’s fighting performance against Geoff Tait. Hibbert lost the third game - against Foulds after having match balls twice, but won seven straight points to take the fourth ' after trailing, 2-6. For his effort 1 he shared the Fendalton Wines ; Centre’s “player of the week”; I award with Lvn Chamberlain. served notice that it will be a big danger in the Wilson Shield rounds by recording a clean sweep over the bottom team, Christchurch 8., but its No. 1, Barry McNeil, was a little lethargic and had to struggle to beat the under-rated George Balanl. The main features of Burnside’s B convincing win over Sumner were Stuart Davenport’s third successive victory—gained at the expense of the veteran. Les Milne—and the fosmidable form showed by the oldest member of the team, Harry Shepherd, over John MacDougall. Sumner’s only win—sufficient to stay ahead of Linwood—was gained by John (“J.C.”) Christensen who easily disposed of the Burnside youngster, Robin Clements. In the women’s section, Burnside A had its first win, thanks to the Chamberlain upset, and tlie hard-working Sumner-Lin-wood player, Sharyn Lane, surprised by beating Agnes Huriwai (Christchurch Ci In one of her best performances of the season Points:— Men.—Burnside A 58, Christchurch A 54, High School Old Boys A 50.
