Mairehau High brilliant
Mairehau High School played a brilliant game of basketball to beat Checkers, 69-61. in the women’s A grade section at Cowles Stadium on Saturday. Tile teams were neck and neck for most of the game, and at half-time Mairehau held a narrow lead of 30-29. Jeanette Howard excelled for Mairehau, scoring prolifically in the first half. She finished with a total of 31 points. The Checkers scoring was evenly distributed, with Sharon Rennejl and Heather Morrison providing some excellent shots. Chris Chaplin was quick to take possession when Mairehau made strong attacks. Rebels admirably defeated the up-and-coming Christchurch United 58-50. . Warne scored 24 points. At half-time Rebels held a one-point lead over United, and words of encouragement from both coaches Increased the pace even still. Heather Carr took goals with ease for United to score 15 points. Mairehau A won a hard-fought game against University. 72-68, after University held a 34-31 half-time lead. Joslyn Douglas was prominent for University, and scored 21 points. The experienced Mairehau player, Patsy Hinkley, led Mairehau’s goal shooting in the second half, and scored 22 points.
