Firemen save tropical fish

A tank of tropical fish were saved from a burning house yesterday by firemen using breathing apparatus. Two appliances were sent at 11.13 a.m. to fight a blaze in a house at 48 Gladson Avenue, Riccarton. The occupants, Mr and Mrs F. Keane, were out when the fire started, but firemen res-

cued the fish, which were not harmed.

i A bedroom was damaged in the fire, which was I quickly extinguished and ; other rooms suffered minor damage from smoke and water.

Three fire appliances were sent to another blaze at 43 Skipton Street, Shirley, at 12.35 p.m. yesterday. The fire was confined to one room and quickly put out by firemen using breathing gear. The residents of the Skipton Street home, Mr and Mrs D. J. Polson, said that their 13-year-old daughter’s possessions were lost in the fire.

“She is very upset. She has nothing left,” said Mrs Polson. Other rooms in their home were badly charred and smoke damaged. The alarm was given by a neighbour, Mrs M. H. Honey, who first saw smoke billowing from a bedroom. It is believed the fire may have been caused by an electrical fault.
