Charges rise, rentals drop
The Canterbury Public Library is still experiencing a large increase in membership. In April, it was up to 167,315 from 56,069 the year before. But last month, the central library and its branches received less money from rental books, in spite of a rise in charges and a much larger rise in the total number of books issued. While issues rose to 123,225 books from 96,403 in April last year, total receipts for rental books dropped from $5287 to $5006. By raising charges on popular books, the council [may have driven readers laway from them and toward books that carried no charge, said Councillor David Caygill, a critic of the rental system. Because the April figure was the first since higher charges took effect, the council will wait to see if the decline in rentals is a trend.
