Shearing contest
Bath, England Australian and New Zeal..nd shearers will compete in the first world sheepshearing contest in Britain, to be held at the bicentennial Royal Bath and West Agricultural Show, which opened yesterday in Somerset, the Associated Press reported. Expert shearers from Austria, Britain, the Falkland Islands, France, Ireland, Libya, and West Germany as well as Australia and New Zealand will compete for £2OOO prize-money and the Golden Shears title. The five-day show is one of the major events of the British farming year. Among the sights this time will be two dairymaids in period costume making Cheddar cheese from 70 gallons (318 litres) of milk a day — as it was done in 1877.
