Town team has three surprises
The selection of the Town rugby team to play Country at Lancaster Park on Monday has provided food for thought.
Placed in the reserves are the All Blacks, Lyn Davis and Scott Cartwright, and the Canterbury flanker and High School Old Boys No. 8, Stuart Purdon, has lost his position to the industrious New Brighton No. 8, John Te Amo. Randall Scott, who played for Canterbury against Marlborough, has taken Cartwright’s place on the fight wing, and Mark Romans has been given his chance at halfback.
The Canterbury and Town selectors (Messrs S. F. Hill and G. Wilson) are possibly thinking to the future in their selections, and the three surprise choices will no doubt come under close scrutiny. Another surprise selection is the brad ting of the Meri-vale-Papanui lock, John Harwood, with the regular Canterbury lock, Dave Thompson. Vance Stewart is the other lock, but he is under an injury cloud and it would have been more understandable had Harwood been bracketed with him.
The team is: R. G. Wilson; Scott, S. Gibbons, T. W. Mitchell: M. R. McEwan, P. A. Macfie; Romans; Te Amo; A. R. Harvey, Thompson. or Harwood. Stewart, J. K. Phillips; M. Cron, R. W. Norton (captain), M. Harding. Reserves. — Backs: Davis, Cartwright, A. C. Barton. Forwards: Purdon, B. Mustchin. Manager: Mr S. R. Williams.
Training at Rugby Park at 5.30 p.m., Thursday.
