Royal Mariner fancied today in first leg at Pukekohe

Royal Mariner was no match for Evelyn’s Choice in the Jumpers* Flat at Rotorua last Saturday, but the opposition today is by no means as strong and he is selected to take out the Seddon High-weight, first leg of the T.A.B. double at Pukekohe. A vast majority of runners in the field have been racing recently over fences and Royal Mariner should prove a little quick for most of them over the 2200 m flat journey. Dee Light is likely to pose a problem. He won well in high-weight class at Whangarei last Friday and that run is sure to improve him Sobieski, third behind Dee Light at Ruakaka has to be con-1 sidered in this company. Balkanese looks the one to beat in the second leg, the| Railway Handicap. He made up a lot of ground i for fifth over 1400 m at Waikato on May 14 and should take advantage of a handy draw today.
