Addington Market Prime cattle easier; lambs improve

Prime cattle values eased again at the Addington Market yesterday, following a further decline in the export beef schedule on Monday, and the threat of industrial action by shop assistants on Thursday and Friday.

i For other vendors, however, there were compensations. The prime lamb market was very strong, with best lambs reaching or bettering $lB a head. Prime sheep also had a very sound sale, with young wethers improving on recent rates. Dairy cattle met a good demand from local town suppliers, (the best of the heifers realising $lB3. Prime lambs Prime lambs had a particularly I strong sale. At 680 the yarding was the smallest of the year, and barely half the requirements of the retail trade. This no doubt arose from the very adverse weather on Monday, when drafting would have been virtually impossible on many properties. As well as the usual buyers there was some added competition and this made for a very strong market, with values for good butchers’ lambs improving as much as $2 a head. Values:— Best butchers’ lambs, to $18.50. Medium lambs, §15,50 to $16.80. Light lambs, $13.50 to $14.50. Leading sales of prime lambs included: — V. D. Williamson (Rakaial, 60 at $16.40 to $18.50; W. Prime sheep Prime sheep had a very good sale, probably to be expected after the small sale of lambs earlier in the day. The yarding of 755 head was again very small; but, it included some very useful quality sheep. Young wethers were in keen demand, at values up to §2 ahead of last week’s rates, where quality was good. Ewes were fully firm throughout. This section included quite a number of ewes with very sound mouths, and it was perhaps fortuniate that they drew some farmer competition. Best young wethers, to $lB. Medium wethers, $15.50 to $l7. Other wethers, down to $l4. Older wethers, $12.30 to $14.40. Best adult ewes, woolly, to i $14.60. i Medium ewes, $ll to $12.30. Other ewes, $9 to $10.50. Possible (Industrial action by shop assistants on Thursdav and Friday -led to retail buyers limiting (heir orders, and. as was to be expected, the decline followed a further fall in the export schedule for beef earlier in the week. ( Another factor was a rise of 55 to $3l in cost of killing at the citv abbattoirs. Taking these into account, the sale was probablv ouite good Steers eased bv S 7 to $B, and heifers by $4 to $5. Cows fully reflected the fall of 4c a kg in export schedule rates. The warding was 552. compared wlht almost 600 the previous week, and it included a

| fair selection of good quality steers. Medium-weight steer beef sold at 55c a kg, with good quality light-weights at 57c; heifer beef at 48c to 50c a kg, and the best of the cow beef at 42c a kg. The offering of 13 head was the first representative selection for some weeks, and competition came solely from local dairymen. The best of the Friesian heifers sold to $lB3, and there were two other sales of heifers at $lBO, while good medium heifers sold at $l5O to $164. A young cow fetched $l7B. and other medium cows at $l3O to $l6O. Walers After a rather slow beginning, the veal sale was steady through-

out, although at rates $5 to $6 short of last week. The yarding of 200 head was a reasonably good selection for this stage of the season. Baby beef sold to $92. with good vealers at $7O to $7B, medium at $6O to $6B. and light at $4B to $55. On estimated hook weight good quality veal was selling at 50c to 52c a kg. Fat pigs Although fat pigs had a rather restricted sale, t lie market remained much on a par with the rates of last week. The yarding was fairly small, and medium porkers predominated Light and unfinished porkers had a very limited demand, at values $3 to $4 back on last week’s rates. Where quality was good, the good quality choppers had a firm sale but plain pigs proved very difficult to sell. Values:— Light porkers, to $3B Medium and heavy porkers $4l to $48.75. Light baconers, $49 to $54. Heavy baconers, $55 to $6O. Extra-heavy pigs, to $67.25. Choppers, good, to $56.50. Store pigs Store pigs sold well, particularly the better-quality slips and weaners. The yarding, however, was small and buyers were very selective. Compared with last sale, the market was firm, and in some cases as much as $5 a head stronger. Breeding stock again met limited inquiry, quality generally being poor. Values:— Small weaners, to $ll. Good weaners, $11.50 to $17.50. Slips, $lB to $24. Small stores, $14.50 to $2B. Large stores, $2B to $32.75. Unfinished porkers, to $37.25.
