Holly Lea’s future uncertain
Holly Lea, the 75-year-old mansion in Manchester Street, formerly used as a house of residence for trainee dental nurses, will be handed over to the Lands and Survey Department. The house which was built by Mr Alan McLean, a wealthy retired station owner, in the late 1890 s is now owned by the Ministry of Works and Development. Trainee dental nurses have lived in the 23,000 sq ft building since 1956. The Ministry of Works’ district property officer (Mr K. C. Kidd) said yesterday that the future of the house was uncertain, “The Lands Department may - decide to sell the property or let it. Nobody knows,” he said.
The house is believed to be the largest wooden dwelling in New Zealand.
