Cauthen hurt at Belmont
NZPA New York: i sensational 17-year-old appren- i tice jockey Steve Cauthen and ; veteran rider Jorge Velasquez > were badly injured on Monday in I a three-horse spill at Belmont Park. Doctors said both riders had suffered concussion. Cauthen, I who has won 252 races in New York this year, also suffered a laceration over Ills right eye and a deep cut in his right hand. A third jockey, Patrick Day, was thrown from his mount as the three horses became tangled at the quarter-pole in a SUSI3.OOO claiming race. Two of the horses. Bay Streak! and Volney, had to be destroyed after the accident. ; Cauthen, who loses his apprentice allowance on Friday, was I aboard Bay Streak in a mile and ,'a quarter race when the horse I apparently broke his leg on the turn. Velasquez, on Volney, tried to go over Cauthen, but could not avoid the pile-up and went down. Low Return, ridden by Pat Day, was unable to avoid the spill. Day was only shaken up and did not need hospital treatment.
Cauthen, who is the leading jockey in the United States this season, turned 17 on May 1 and has ridden more than 250 winners for winnings of more than SUS2.6M this year.
