Woman falls off bluff
A young Christchurch woman who fell 30ft off a bluff in the Aickens area, west of Otira, on Sunday afternoon was able to walk out with rescuers yesterday afternoon. Miss Jocelyn Syme, aged 20, of 49 Grange Street, was tramping with a party of nine people, when the accident occurred. Miss Syme said she fell down the bluff, landing on the rocks below and bruising her hips. She also suffered a cut to her right knee that later required two stitches. Constable D. A. Webb, of Otira, was told of the accident which happened about 300 yards upstream of the Otehake swingbridge. A search-and-rescue squad was mobilised, but swollen rivers prevented a crossing until levels fell. Four-wheel drive vehicles were used to cross the rivers yesterday and the party then walked for about two hours to reach Miss Syme and the other trampers. “They brought a stretcher, but I was able to walk,” she said at her home last evening.
