N.Z. bowler beats Canadian

NZPA London A mystery illness struck many of the players and officials at the world women’s bowling championships at Worthing, Sussex, yesterday but play was mostly unaffected. The overnight leader, Norma de la Motte, of Papua New Guinea, had mixed fortunes in the fourth and fifth series of the singles. The Australian-born Mrs de la Motte suffered a surprising reversal against Canada’s June Bell in early play, losing by a margin of 17-21. However, in the fifth series she recovered to chalk up a 21-16 win over Israel’s Helen Grodon. Elsie Wilkie, the defending champion from New Zealand, had a bye in the fourth series and later registered a 21-18 win over June Bell in the fifth series. In the fifth series of the fours, New Zealand lost 1820, to Canada. Ireland and Papua New Guinea lead the fours with five wins for seven points while New Zealand shares third with six points, with England, Australia and the United States. However, New Zealand has only played four games against the other teams’ five.
