Money for charity

Legacies of more than $55,000 have been left to a variety of charities under the will of the late Charles John (known as Don) Gasson who died in Sumner in January. He was 76.

The value of the estate was about $150,000. After legacies, duties and expenses have been paid most of the residue of the estate will be shared equally between the Foundation for the Blind and the Canterbury and West Coast branch of the Crippled Children Society. Mr Gasson was born in Sydenham, and was an apprentice carpenter after leaving school. He later moved with his wife, Constance, to Arthur’s Pass where they lived for 10 years. After moving to Hanmer Springs, Mr Gasson worked as a builder for 25 years. The couple retired in 1959 to Amberley, where Mrs Gasson died in, 1962. Mr Gasson moved to Sumner in 1973.
