Canterbury holds bowls trophy

Canterbury convincingly beat Otago, 32j-15L in its second defence of the A. S. Paterson indoor bowls trophy at Kearney’s Road hall on Saturday.

Of the Canterbury team, Gary Barnes was the only skip to lose his first-round pairs. He was beaten by Harley Webster, 4-8, but he later beat Webster in the singles. A former Canterbury player, Darryl Cook, was well beaten in the pairs by Trevor Austin, but triumphed 8-6 in the singles. Austin defeated Cook in the fours, but Alf Williamson was held to a draw by Barrie Craig. Canterbury led 17-7 half-wav.

There were several interesting results in the second round. Sam Burton beat Barnes in the pairs, 6-3, and Cook downed Williamson. 9-3. But both took their revenge in singles, with Barnes beating Burton. 9-5; and Williamson headed Cook bv nine points.
