Attacking boxing wins bout

Lopeti Fidow (Fidow’s Gym), a powerfully-built Samoan middle-weight comfortably beat Brent Wilkinson (New Brighton R.S.A.) in the most exciting bout of the Canterbury boring trainers’ tournament at tiie Caledonian Hail yesterday. Fidow attacked from the opening bell and although being put down for a compulsory eight count in the first round, set about his opponent with vigour and courage in the remaining two rounds, landing hard left jabs and the odd booming right cross to build up a commanding lead.

Steven Henry (Woolston W.M.C.) was too powerful and experienced lor John Glenn (Barry’s Gym). Glenn, having his first fight, was by no means disgraced and against all odds courageously faced his opponent and it was disappointing for him that the referee, Mr M. V. Drury, stopped the bout in favour of Henry in the last round.

The last bout of the afternoon was a very close battle between Roy Waree (Woolston W.M.C.) and Robert Gibbs (Barry’s Gym).

In the first two rounds, Wares sailed into his opponent, scoring handsomely with many fast left and right hooks, building up a narrow lead.

The final round saw Gibbs employing a splendid left jab to slow a tiring Waree but a' marginal points decision was given in favour of Waree. Several boxers from Ashburton and lemuka fought and although their successes were limited, most showed promise, particularly Mike Gill, a good Ashburton southpaw who lost a split decision to Robert Lewington (Barry’s Gym), a New Zealand water polo representative. Other results were:—

K- Nicol (Barry’s Gym) beat B. White (Ashburton); I. Schwaiger (Barry’s Gym) beat D. Wilson (Temuka); W. Henderson (W.W.M.C.) beat B. Nicol (Temuka;; S. Ihompson (W.W.M.C.) beat G. Choate (Barry’s Gym); P. La Bruin (Barry’s Gym: beat T. Handy (Ashburton); K. Soloman (Temuka) beat S. Ross iW.W - M.C.); M. Fuller (W.W.M.C.) beat C. Bishop (Burwood); T. Reece (Barry’s Gym) beat A. Hart (Ashburton).
