Running for aid

For the second successive year a Christchurch man will make a solo road run to help advertise Crippled Children’s Week, which begins today. Mr Ivan Hawkey completed a four day run from Timaru to Christchurch last year, but this year will be attempting the 336 km from Greymouth to Christchurch via the Lewis Pass. Mr Hawkey started his run last Saturday and will continue to run for Crippled Children’s Week. He will leave Greymouth bearing a message of goodwill from the Mayor of Greymouth to the Mayor of Christchurch.

Mr Hawkey’s schedule is: • First Day: Greymouth to Ahaura, 40 km (25 miles). Accommodation provided by Mrs Walker at Greymouth. • Second Day: Ahaura to Reefton, 40 km (25 miles). Accommodation sponsored by Hotel Reefton. I. A. and F. E. Wren. Prop. • Third Day: Reefton to Springs Junction, 45 km (28 miles). Accommodation sponsored by Springs Tourist Village, Ltd, Mr P. Searle, manager. • Fourth Day: Springs Junction to 19 km (12 miles) past Lewis Pass, 40 km (25 miles). Accommodation sponsored by Springs Tourist Village, Ltd.

• Fifth Day: Start from 19 km past Lewis Pass and continue 40 km (25 miles) further. Return to Springs Junction for sponsored accommodation.
