Furniture worth $¼M on show

About $250,000 worth of furniture will be on display at the Christchurch Town Hall this week for the ninth Canterbury Furniture Show. The show is an annual exhibition by members of the New Zealand Furniture Manufacturers’ Federation. It is one of two national shows; the other is held at Auckland in February. This year the 43 manufacturers exhibiting at the show have attracted the interest of more than 150 retailers. Members of the furniture industry throughout the country were taking part in the show and a small group of Australian exhibitors was ex-

pected, said the show’s organiser, Mr D. Jones, the executive officer of the Canterbury Manufacturers’ Association. The first two days and a half of the show, from May 23 to noon on May 25, were for the benefit of the retail trade. The public would be admitted free from midday to 9 p.m. on Wednesday to Friday. Six awards would be offered to exhibitors. Retailers would vote for the best pieces in each category and an independent judge would decide the best display of furniture and the’ best fabric display, Mr Jones said.
