‘Work year’ after school
! PA Aucklanc - A “year out” scheme ■ should be introduced to en- ' courage young people to spend a year working, in the community before leaving "-school or going on to further training, the Leader of the I Opposition (Mr Rowling) -said in Auckland yesterday. - “The principle is that he or 1 she should do something
Iquite different from their planned career,” he told the Princes Street branch of the Labour Party. “They should take time out to see how other sections of society work,” said Mr Rowling. ■ The spell would broaden the basis for a decision about 'future goals. “The social benefits from such a scheme are obvious, and the cost would be limited. “The important thing is that they would not be locked
into a system that commits 1 them to a once-only, longterm career choice immediately upon leaving school. “Youngsters not only need to be better informed about what they are likely to meet when they leave school, but they should actually have some work experience woven in as part of their curriculum,” he said. Schemes where a student spent part of the week out in the community in some relevant work were common overseas, said Mr Rowling.
