Jubilee regatta
The Lake Kaniere Power Boat Club will celebrate its golden jubilee with a 27-race Easter regatta programme this week-end. Thirteen races will be held today and another 14 will be held tomorrow, including the second heats for five South Island championships — the 1650 cu. cm open inboard, the 750 cu. cm restricted racing runabout outboard, the 750 cu. cm open hydro outboard. t'he unlimited racing runabout outboard and the 1650 cu. cm restricted hydro outboard. For the first time in New Zealand, championships are being run in two heats and the international points system will be used. All other countries use this system and the Lake Kaniere club regards it as the fairest method. Innovations are nothing new to this club as a number of years ago it was the first in New Zealand to
introduce the now compulsory photo start-finish camera for all championship events. Felix, an Arnold Johnson racing runabout owned and driven by Charlie Newport, of Ross, has been the most successful boat this year. It has won both the New Zealand and South Island championship for its class, 1300 cu. cm racing runabouts. Boats seen at the regatta will reveal the considerable development made since the first organised power boat racing took place during the summer of 1927 at Sunny Bight. Lake Kaniere. Most of the boats were inboard launches but one was the stopped (outboard) hydroplane, XQQME, owned and built by J. N. Robinson, originally of Christchurch.
“Robbie” successfully ■ towed four aquaplaners at ! the then startling speed of i 20 m.ph. during the first Lake Kaniere regatta.
