Huge field in Auckland run
A huge field of 20.000—8000 more than last year—started in the Round the Bays community run. of 11.2 km, at Auckland on Saturday.
Ambulancemen took 17 persons to hospital and treated an estimated 200 more for heat exhaustion.
Some had given medical experts “cause for concern,” an ambulance spokesman said “A lot of people seemed qrite unfit for this type of run,” he said.
Ambulancemen had had to work “flat out” to deal with those who had collapsed, and had : found it difficult at some stages to manoeuvre their vehicles among the crowd of runners.
The first man home was Phillip Wilson, the Auckland 5000 m champion, who is coached by Gordon Pirie. in 31min 4sec. Dick Quax was about tenth, in 34min 44sec.
