Water ski-ing on the Estuary

Sir. — I note that Brian Alderdice invites people to pack the Christchurch City Council gallery. The council does not lack envbonmenralists, and I would rate councillors Blaxail and Brittenden (referred to in earlier correspondence) among the most earnest. They also have reasoning minds. Most of the Estuary is protected from speedboats at all times, by By-law 66. enacted by the council with full sjmpa-

thy for all environmental principles. The present discussion concerns limited activity where, by consensus, power-boats already operate — activity which the present evidence suggests would be tolerated by a majority of those residents most closely affected. I would guess that the proposal will not be passed, but the debate should be logical, not emotional. In encouraging the gallery to influence the debate, Cr Alderdice reverses timehonoured Parliamentary principles. — Yours, etc., P. D. DUNBAR (Cr) March 13, 1977.

Sir, — The Estuary is a unique and oeaceful place with more than 30 species of birds such as herons, terns, and oyster-catchers living there, many of them protected by law. There are also many people, old and young, whose peace would suffer as a result of allowing water ski-ing. It has been tried before without success. Will the 10 tn.p.h. speed limit be enforced? I apnlaud the stand of Crs Skellerup and Clark as, 1 am sure, do

many other local residents. — Yours, etc., LORNA HUGHES. March 11, 1977.

Sir, — With reference to the decision of the Christchurch City Council (apparently against the wishes of a large majority, as evinced by recent polls) to allow water ski-ing on the Estuary is it possible for you to obtain, and for you to publish, the names of councillors who voted for or against this measure, also council departments and departmental officials in favour of it. I feel sure that an explanation as to how the expressed wishes of a large majority of people, can be ignored, and by whom, would be of considerable interest to many of your readers. — Yours, etc., E. LAWRENCE WYLES.

March 11, 1977. [Two councillors voted against a trial proposal in a committee. The full council has yet to vote on the proposal. — Editor],
