Salaries blamed
The high staff turnover and the difficulties in recruiting staff were seriously affecting the quality of the service given by social welfare agencies, the national president of the Association of Social Workers (Mr M. A. O’Brien) said in Christchurch. The salary levels were the main reasons for the difficulties in recruiting and retaining staff, he said. During the last five years the Department of Social Welfare had lost 218 of its 500 staff members. The responsibilities of social workers had increased markedly since the last salary review in 1967, Mr O’Brien said. The association’s national council considered the speedy resolution of the salaries question to be extremely important if social workers were to provide the quality of service demanded, Mr O’Brien said.
