Labour men withdraw
Two Latour candidates have withdrawn from the election for the Christchurch City Council. Mr R. Todd was to have stood for the east ward this year, and Mr D. O'Connell, the district organiser of the New Zealand Carpenters’ Union, was to have stood for the south ward. Mr Todd was a candidate in the 1974 election. The Christchurch Labour Metropolitan Representation Committee accepted the withdrawal of the candidates with regret and thanked them for their pledge of support to Mr A. Clark, the Mavoral candidate. and other Labour candidates. at a meeting on Wednesday evening. The campaign co-ordinator (Mr D. Close) said that neitheir of the letters of withdrawal was explicit on the reason for their decisions. "They were nominated as individuals, and their withdrawal is an individual matter.'’ he said. Selection committees for the two wards concerned will meet within a few weeks.
