Band practice well rewarded
Many hours of practice! were rewarded for the! Christchurch Scottish I Society when it gained third place in the A grade last; week-end at the pipe band! championships. The bandl had three thirds and a sec-! ond in the four sections. j Its drum-major (Mr G. H.l I Price) said that the band had; practised for 12 hours a; week in the month before! the contest, before that, it] had practised eight hours a week. The band has competed; successfully for the last; seven years, with five thirds 1 and a second to its credit. i “Last year we slipped to fifth, so we were very pleased to move up again,” said Mr Price. “The two bands ahead of us are very hard to beat.” The band is composed solely of Christchurch people.
IThe average age of members lis about 28. The youngest is (only 14. For five members, [the championships were jtheir first national contest. ! Mr Price said that he was ;keen to find more pipers for [the band. “At the moment, jwe have 13 and we would (like at. least another three,” ihe said. I He said that there was still much interest in the pipes and that many young people were keen to learn. I The Scottish Society has [cancelled all practice for the ;next month while members ! have a well-earned rest. I Motor-racing. — The famous motor-racing name of Aston Martin is coming back to the Le Mans 24-hour race this year after a 13-year absence. Mr Briton Hamilton will run a DBS V 8 as a private entry, under group, 5 rules, the so-called silhouette class in which exterfsive modifications are permitted.
