Pipes watch for Queen
PA Auckland An unusual assignment for the R.N.Z.A.F., to provide a piper skilled in any airs Royalty may request, has not proved too difficult. The R.N.Z.A.F. came up with the man — Leading Aircraftsman J. H. Ritchie, a Territorial who nivmaKy works as a Hamilton land agent. He was one of a 13-man R.N.Z.A.F. guard mounted at Government House, Auckland, last night during the Queen’s stay. Apart from piping the guard on and off, L. A. C. Ritchie’s orders were to be around the grounds ready to play any airs requested—pibroch, reels and so on — a touch of old Balmo.J in deepest Epsom. The guard was posted at 3.30 p.m., with two sentry boxes. Reliefs were rostered on for two-hour periods throughout the night.
