Chase after taxi
An opportunist who took a taxi after it was in a collision last evening was quickly apprehended by Ministry of Transport officers. The incident, described as “complicated” by the police, began when the taxi and a car collided at the intersection of Barbadoes Street and Kilmore Street about 10 p.m. The car roared away from the scene with the taxi in hot pursuit.
Ministry of Transport officers and the taxi-driver finally stopped the fugitive car in Kilmore Street near Madras Street, but while they were speaking to the driver, a passenger in the car leaped out and drove off in the damaged taxi. The police were called, and the man was stopped a few blocks away. He will appear in the Christchurch Magistrate’s Court today charged with unlawfully taking a car.
