Regional Labour meeting
About 150 Labour Party delegates and supporters are expected to attend the Canterbury regional conference of the party m Christchurch at the weekend. The branch delegates, from Canterbury and the West Coast, will discuss 79 remits. Those passed will be forwarded to the party’s national conference in Christchurch in May. Among the remits is one calling for "a programme of community ownership of key industries under democratic control.” Others deal with superannuation, housing, health, and industrial relations. • The Leader of the Opposition (Mr Rowling) is expected to open the twoday conference, the first regional conference to be held. Usually branch remits are considered at national conferences, but the party hopes that by holding regional conferences it can cut down on the work load for the national delegates. As a further means of cutting down on conference time branch remits have been groomed by committees of the various electorates.!
