Some not ready for super, date
About 1000 applicants for national superannuation claimed it too late to be included in the first local pay-out yesterday.
The acting director of the; Social Welfare Department, (Mr C. L. Waters) said yesterday that there had been fewer than 8000 applications, through the department S| Christchurch office. While he could not give; exact figures, because the. payment advice slips and;
payment vouchers were issued by the Computer Centre at Wellington, he said he thought that fewer than 7000 local applicants would have received their money. This, he said, was because their applications had been received too late for processing toward yesterday’s payment.
“These late applicants will receive their money in due course,” he said. "People who have not yet applied, and were 60 years of age at February 9, have six months from February 17 in which to I apply. They will get back-pay ’to February 9 if they are fully qualified.” The Computer Bureau slips jshowed the gross amount ! payable to a single person as [592.20 a fortnight, and to a ! married person $76.84, the
married couple total being! [5158.68. The gross amounts are re-1 duced to $79.62, $67.62 and' i $131.44 respectively at thei primary tax deduction, and' $74.72, $62,40 and $124.62 at| the secondary taxation rate. According to the PA, thei Post Office's central computer was having technical problems and could not handle the national superannuation direct credits into Post Office savings bank personal cheque accounts. However, a Post Office spokesman said that other arrangement had been made and the superannuitants would have no trouble about drawing against their superannuation credits.
