Spanish Govt under pressure

NZPA-Reuter Madrid The Spanish Government has come under renewed Left-wing pressure as the Communist Party leader. Santiago Carrillo, enters his second week of his imprison- [ merit since his arrest in a Madrid working-class suburb. Riot policemen are out in force throughout the capital to prevent any demonstrations on behalf of Carrillo and the seven senior Communist Parly members arrested with him: the party has threatened further agitation unless all- are released immediately. There have been scuffles between small groups of protesters and the police, but no repetition of the riots in central Madrid involving teargas and rubber bullets that occurred the day after Carrillo’s arrest.

Several hundred people took to the streets in Corunna. to the north, and in Jerez de la Frontera, in the south, -to demand the release of the Communist leaders, but. no clashes have been reported. Carrillo and his comrades have been charged with illegal association, for which

the maximum penalty is six vears imprisonment. They have all appealed against the charge, which is based on a law banning parties with totalitarian aims and subject to international discipline.

The lawyers of the detained men and party officials have expressed confidence that the Government will soon free the men in the face of international pressure and Left-wing unrest. The families of the detained men have appealed to King Juan Carlos to intervene on their behalf, on the ground that their release is “essential to guarantee peace and peaceful co-existence among Spaniards.” According to the Madrid daily newspaper. “El Pais.” a handwritten message has been received from the kidnapped President of the Advisory Council of State, Mr Antonio Maria Oriol y Urquijo, whose abduction on December 11 has been completely overshadowed in the Spanish press by the arrest of the Communist group

The new note indicates that it was written after Christmas. and il is assumed that Mr Oriol is still alive.
