Mayor’s tribute to Sir George
“Sir George Manning was deservedly one of Christchurch’s longest-serving mayors and won strong support from all sections of the community because of his humility, deep concern for his fellow men, and high ideals of service,” said the Mayor of Christchurch (Mr H. G. Hay) yesterday. “Though a dedicated member of the Labour Party, Sir i George did not allow party i politics to dominate his 1 actions, and as Mayor was always fair and impartial in his control of the council,” Mr Hay said. “He was deeply interested in educational and cultural matters, and was always keen to promote the development of amenities such as libraries, the Canter--1: ~ry Museum, the Town .Hall, and the University of Canterbury. “He gave unsparingly cf
his time to welfare and organisations concerned with the handicapped, but possibly he will be best remembered for his sendees to the Workers’ Educational Association and to education generally, and for his personal achievement in gaining not only an M.A. degree but i later an honorary doctorate of laws from the university.” Mr Hay said.
