Skate-board rink built at Waihi
PA Auckland Most of the safety problems of skate-boards are being answered in Waihi. The Waihi Lions Club has built a $lOOO skate-board bowl believed to be the first in New Zealand. Children with skate-boards under their arms watched while concrete was poured into the excavations of the bowl at a Waihi playground a month ago, and since then a constant stream of young board riders has used the 165 sq. m bowl. The Lions publicity officer (Mr J. Morgan)) said “The bowl is a lot more fun for the kids than riding on the road and it is obviously much I safer.”
The idea for the bowl was that of a Waihi builder, Mr Des Spiers, after he attended a Lions International conference in Honolulu. He found details of the skate-board bowl in magazines in Hawaii. When he returned. encouraged by his son who is a keen skateboarder, Mr Spiers designed the oval bowl for Waihi. Local firms gave material and labour which helped to reduce costs.
The bowl, which may be extended, has two humps in the centre. The young users rate it as “fantastic.” One said, “If you ride a surf board, then using the bowl improves your surfing tremendously.”
