1897 bicycle on the road
PA Ashburton! What is believed to be the only bicycle of its kind in New Zealand, an 1897 Sterling, is ridden by a young Ashburton girl, Karen Palmer. Built at Kenosha, Wisconsin, the machine was patented in 1895, but the one owned by Karen Palmer was built on January 12, 1897. The bicycle originally belonged to her grandfather, and has been used by three generations of her family.
Karen, who is 10, said that a lot of children at her school had shown an interest in the bicycle, and she had been asked by the headmaster to take it to school to give a talk about it. The distinguishing feature of the Sterling is that it has no chain but is run by a crown wheel and pinion arrangement.
