First Brabin 100 to Reid
The first century of i this year’s Brabin Shield tournament was scored | eesterday at Tlam by I the Wellington batsman, IRichard Reid. Reid's 103 came when I • Wellington needed it most,! es it had lost three early | wickets in reply to Auck-j land's total of 251 for seven! declared. His century in- 1 eluded 14 fours and two Nixes. and none of the Auckland bowlers escaped punishment. Auckland was faced with a similar situation early in its innings, when it lost three early wickets, but it recovered to make the biggest total yet at the tournament. The Auckland captain, i Peter Webb, and Rewi Newn-| ham added 117 in an aggres-j give stand. Webb hit 17 fours! and Newnham two sixes and! 10 fours. Northern Districts also lost three quick wickets, butj David Ngatai and Braced Marshall added 82 in a solid partnership before the tail folded to some accurate spin bowling from John McDonald. who completed nearly 19 overs and took four for 31. Central Districts scored runs quickly against some mediocre Northern bowling, and Andrew Jones and Matthew Toynbee added 102 in nearly even time. Through this partnership Central are now in with an excellent chance of winning this match outright. At Elmwood Park, most of Canterbury’s batsmen made useful contributions to their team’s first-innings total, and Alan Devlin and Vaughan Brown handled the Otago attack with the most assurance.
Colin Jackson’s spinners brought the best figures, but John Lyndsay, who sent down 19 overs for a return of two for 68. toiled hard.
Otago started badly, but recovered through the opener, Jackson, and a hardnit 39 from Lyndsay. Tight bowling from Steven McNally and Steven Bateman ensured that Otago did not get on top at any stage. All three matches could
produce an outright result tomorrow, depending on declarations. Scores: Northern Districts 149 (D. Ngatai 51. B. Marshall 42: J.j McDonald 4/31. J.
